HOUSTON, Texas - University of Houston Director of Athletics Dave Maggard announced Thursday that assistant women's basketball coach DeJuena Chizer has been named the Senior Woman Administrator for the UH Athletics Department.
"DeJuena Chizer will be a real asset to our senior staff as senior woman administrator," said Maggard. "DeJuena has extensive experience as a student-athlete in our program, having been an outstanding performer on our women's basketball team.
"She coached and taught at the high school level for a number of years and has been in our program for the past seven years. She brings a great understanding of our department as well an understanding of our entire university community. We are fortunate to have someone with DeJuena's strength and integrity in our program. For this school year DeJuena will continue her duties as an assistant coach for the women's basketball program."
Chizer graduated from UH in 1990 and played for the Cougars from 1983-87. Prior to coming to Houston in 2000, Chizer spent nine years as the head volleyball coach and assistant basketball mentor at Thomas Jefferson High School (TJHS) in Port Arthur.
"This is a an awesome opportunity for me," said Chizer, "not only because I am going on my eighth year on the women's basketball staff, but also because I am an alumnae, having played here.
"It is awesome to be here and still be part of a program where I can be a part of these young women's lives."
A member of both the Texas High School Coaches Association (THSCA) and the Texas Girls Coaches Association (TGCA), Chizer successfully led the Lady Yellow Jackets into the UIL playoffs in 1991-93 and 1996-99.
She was recognized for her basketball accomplishments in the Museum of the Gulf Coast in 1994 and was honored by the TJHS Yellow Jacket Alumni at the Annual Crying Towel Dinner in August 1994.
Prior to joining TJHS, Chizer spent two seasons playing professional basketball in Europe with Tintoretto in Madrid, Spain, from 1988-89, and with Cantanzaroin in Italy from 1989-90. She was the second leading scorer for both teams, averaging 17 points per contest for Cantanzaro and led both teams in assists each season.
In addition, she also played for the Houston Flames, a semi-professional team and part of the Amateur Athletic Union (AAU) from 1988-91. As the Flames' leading scorer each season, Chizer participated in the Texas AAU All-State in 1990-91 and was subsequently named the AAU Most Valuable Player and leader of the Flames AAU national championship team in 1991.
During her collegiate career with the Cougars, Chizer was named First Team All-Southwest Conference in 1986-87 after leading UH in scoring with 525 points that season.
In addition, Chizer currently ranks on the Cougars' all-time lists in games played, assists, assists per game, steals, free throws made and free throw attempts.
Chizer received a bachelor's of science degree in kinesiology from Houston in 1990 and a provisional all levels physical education certificate in 1991. She and her husband, Derrick, live in Pearland with their two daughters; Kasei (13), and Kaila (11).
Chizer replaces long-time Associate A.D./SWA Diane Hall who retired earlier this summer.
