HOUSTON - For the first time since last Friday, scorching weather was not awaiting the Cougars as they hit the practice fields this afternoon, as the early effects of Tropical Storm Erin provided much-needed cloud cover and cooler weather. Still, the reigning Conference USA champs practiced for over two hours in full pads.
Overall, UH head coach Art Briles seemed pleased with his team's afternoon workout but expects the Cougars to come out tomorrow and practice even harder.
"We didn't have quite the energy we had yesterday for some reason," said the 2006 Conference USA Coach of the Year. "We had a good, long practice, and (it) probably wore on us a little bit. Shoot, we have to rise up and practice like champions.
"We cannot be like everyone else. We have to be a different person and a different team, so that is something we are constantly reminding them of."
As for sophomore Jerrod Butler, who was rushed to the hospital on Monday after collapsing during a morning workout in the Elmer Redd Strength & Conditioning Center, Briles says things are looking up for his sturdy and versatile offensive linemen.
"Jerrod is up (out of the hospital bed) and doing great," added Briles. "He's walking around. Everything looks absolutely fantastic, and we're just thankful and blessed that everything had turned out that way. I am really happy for him and his family and all of our football players."
The Cougars have one more day of two-a-days set for Thursday, practicing at 9:30 am and later again at 3:50 pm. Houston is slated for its second intra-squad scrimmage on Friday afternoon at the friendly confines of John O'Quinn at Robertson Stadium.
