Beth McClendon Named FIU Head Softball Coach

MIAMI, Fla. - University of Houston assistant softball coach Beth McClendon has accepted the head softball coach position at Florida International University Thursday as announced by FIUSports.com. Her appointment is effective immediately.
"It was a difficult decision to leave the University of Houston and the great program we have worked to build, but I truly appreciate the support of both Dave Maggard and Kyla Holas as they helped me make this jump and have supported me throughout my entire time at UH," McClendon said. "I am leaving behind a great group of student-athletes, staff and administration, and I will always cherish my time with them, but I am ready and excited to face the challenges that lay ahead at FIU."
McClendon served as Houston's pitching coach and recruiting coordinator since the 2003 season. She has been instrumental in the development of Angel Shamblin, two-time Conference USA Pitcher and NFCA All-South Region Second-Team performer. Her pitchers have won seven All-Conference USA awards during her tenure.
"We're extremely happy for Beth," head coach Kyla Holas said. "She has been a key part of our program's development not only with the pitching staff but on the recruiting trail. The goal for every assistant coach is to become a head coach one day. She is leaving our program on good terms, and we wish her the best of luck at FIU."
The Cougars are coming off the program's first Conference USA regular season and tournament titles after racking up a program-best 44 wins. Houston ended the 2007 season one win away from the NCAA Super Regionals.
