HOUSTON - Southern Miss junior righthander Barry Bowden struck out seven while scattering six hits to lead the Golden Eagles to a 4-0 win over the University of Houston baseball team Friday evening during the middle game of a Conference USA series at Cougar Field.
Bowden, who did not allow a baserunner to reach third base, collected the win and improved to 7-3.
The Golden Eagles scored single runs in each of the first two innings and never looked back in winning a C-USA series for the fourth time in the last five years against the Cougars.
Trey Sutton went 3-for-5 with a double, while Brian Dozier batted 3-for-5 with a home run to lead the Golden Eagles, who outhit the Cougars 14-6. Michael Ewing went 2-for-5, and Keith Winstead finished the night 2-for-4 with two runs and a home run in the win.
UH starter Wes Musick collected the loss and fell to 6-4 after allowing four runs off 12 hits and a walk with four strikeout in 6.2 innings.
With the loss, the Cougars dropped to 28-25 overall, 12-11 in C-USA games, while Southern Miss improved to 36-19 overall, 13-10 in C-USA games. It also was the first time since 1972 that the Cougars were shutout in consecutive games.
The Cougars wrap up the series at 1 p.m., Saturday, at Cougar Field. Junior righthander Bryan Tully will make his second straight C-USA start when he toes the rubber during the Southern Miss series finale on Saturday. This season, Tully has posted a 2-1 record with 16 strikeouts and a 5.09 ERA in 23.0 innings.
Making his debut as a starting pitcher, Tully was the Cougars' steadiest starter during the entire Memphis series on May 11-13, holding the Tigers to four runs off seven hits and two walks with a strikeout in six innings of work on the way to the win. His outing nearly tripled his previous longest outing of 2.1 innings against Sam Houston State on Feb. 13.
Sunday's game will be Tully's first career pitching appearance against the Golden Eagles. However, he has made six starts in the field, compiling a 308 batting average (8-for-26) with eight runs, a double, home run and three RBIs.
Righthander David Clark will start the series finale for the Golden Eagles on Saturday. This season, Clark has posted a 7-4 record with 62 strikeouts and a 4.76 ERA in 73.2 innings.
The Golden Eagles scored in the first inning when Jody Blount's double down the left-field line scored Trey Sutton, who led off with a double to left field.
USM pushed its advantage to 2-0 in the second inning when Keith Winstead launched a solo homer over the right-field wall.
In the sixth inning, Chris Matesich's RBI-single through the left side plated Carson from second base.
The Golden Eagles pushed their lead to 4-0 in the seventh inning when Dozier led off with a solo home run to left field.
