HOUSTON - The University of Houston softball team (42-16) was placed in the NCAA College Station Regional as the No. 2 seed and faces No. 23 Louisiana-Lafayette Friday at 1pm CDT at the Aggie Softball Complex on the Texas A&M campus.
The Cougars (42-16) also are joined by the No. 4 national seed Texas A&M and Sam Houston State. Those two teams will square off Friday at 4pm CDT.
This is the first time since the 2004 season that Houston has made the NCAA Regionals. The Cougars went 1-2 in Waco in its initial regional trip.
"The good news with this selection is that we know what we're up against," head coach Kyla Holas said. "We've played every team in our regional this season in mid-week doubleheaders so there are no surprises in store for us."
After starting the season 7-6, the Cougars have won 35 of their last 45 games with five of the 10 setbacks during the stretch coming against Top 25 opponents. In fact, 11 of Houston's 16 losses this season have come against Top 25 foes. Five of those 11 losses came by a single run.
The winner of the NCAA College Station Regional will take on the champion of the NCAA Gainesville Region in a three-game weekend set on May 25-26.
