IRVING - Angel Shamblin was named Conference USA Pitcher of the Week Monday afternoon for the third time this season and eighth time of her career as announced by the league office. The Florida native is only one of five pitchers in league history to win the weekly honor eight times.
For the fifth consecutive weekend, Shamblin toed the rubber and picked up a pair of victories in C-USA action as the Cougars took two of three games at UTEP. She went 2-0 with a 1.08 ERA and pushed her streak to 10 consecutive victories in C-USA starts.
She allowed only two earned runs on the weekend against Conference USA's top offense that averaged 6.9 runs per game entering the weekend. She also held the Miners to a .182 batting average as UTEP came into the weekend with C-USA top average at a .324 clip.
Her win in the series opener allowed the Florida native to become the program's first 20-game winner, while her victory in the series finale pushed Shamblin pass Jenny Johnson and Jamie Falco for the top spot on the programs' career wins list with 48.
Shamblin is the only hurler in C-USA to post multiple wins in each of her first five series. Her 10 wins are three more wins than tallied by any other C-USA squad. East Carolina, UAB and Tulsa have recorded seven wins in league play.
Shamblin opened the UTEP series with seven strikeouts and allowed two earned runs on six hits. After allowing the runs in the third inning, Shamblin regrouped and allowed only one runner to reach scoring position the rest of the way.
The junior right-hander returned to dominant form in the series finale being touched up for only two hits and an unearned run. After allowing that unearned run in the third inning, Shamblin retired 11 of the final 13 batters she faced to secure a 9-1 win in the rubber game of the series.
Houston returns to the diamond against No. 15 Louisiana-Lafayette on Wednesday, April 18 at 4pm. The Cougar ace enters the doubleheader 10 strikeouts shy of the 500 for her career and 51 Ks from matching Jenny Johnson (2001-04) for the No. 1 spot on the program's career strikeouts list.
