Tennis Drops 4-3 Decision to UTEP

HOUSTON - The University of Houston tennis team lost a 4-3 to Conference USA UTEP Friday afternoon at Hoff Courts on the UH campus.
"We didn't do a good job of finishing matches," head coach John Severance said. "Give credit to UTEP because they came ready to play and earned this victory."
Neila Starratt and Vicky Simpson started doubles play with a strong 8-3 win at the No. 3 position to put Houston (13-6, 2-3 C-USA) on the board. UTEP (10-7, 3-0 C-USA) fought back and turned deficits at the No. 1 and No. 2 spots to claim the doubles point and a 1-0 lead.
The Miners' top pair of Weronika Bloczynska and Megan Pritchard knocked off Anna Djananova and Leila Salek, 8-6. The attention turned to court two where Loli Gomez and Sonja Nikolic held a 7-5 advantage before Marina Deluca and Isabela Kulaif stormed back for a 9-7 win.
UTEP pushed its advantage to 2-0 as Samantha Attard notched a 6-2, 6-1 win over Djananova at the bottom of the lineup.
Marina Delucha claimed a 6-2, 6-4 victory at the No. 3 spot as the Miners went ahead 3-0.
Simpson cut the deficit to 3-1 with a 6-3, 6-3 triumph at the No. 4 position, while Starratt claimed a hard-fought 6-3, 6-4 win at the No. 5 spot making it 3-2.
UTEP clinched the match as Kuliaf knocked off Gomez 7-6 (4), 6-2 in the No. 2 hole. Salek emerged with a 6-1, 3-6, 6-1 win at the top of the lineup for the final margin of 4-3.
Houston closes out the home schedule against Southern Saturday afternoon at 2pm. Admission is free to Hoff Courts.
