Track and Field Heads to Texas Relays

HOUSTON -- After just three days off, the Houston track and field team will travel to Austin, Texas for the Texas Relays on April 4-7. The 80th Clyde Littlefield Texas Relays are a collegiate and high school meet, featuring some of the best track athletes in the nation.
Last season UH competed in the Texas Relays earning four wins, including the men's 4x400 and 4x200 meter relays.
Wednesday will feature the decathlon and heptathlon events along with the university distance races. Thursday will conclude the decathlon and heptathlon and begin the prelims for the running events and the finals of the hammer throw and men's `B' section pole vault.
Friday and Saturday's events will begin at 9:30 and 9 a.m., respectively. Both days will feature college and high school division races and field events. Awards will be given to the top three athletes or relay teams in each event. Following the meet, one collegiate and one high school team will be named Outstanding Team and one female and one male will be name the Outstanding Performer.
The Relays are held on the Mike A. Myers Track and Soccer Stadium on the UT campus. With seating of 20,000, the complex features a nine-lane European oval track and an all-inclusive site for the field events.
This is the second time the Cougars will head to Austin in 2007. They sent a group of athletes to complete in the field events at the Texas Invitational on March 24. There the Cougars earned two wins and 21 Top 10 finishes. Freshman Alex Bentley tied a season best NCAA regional qualifying mark of 5.05m/16-06.75 in the pole vault for the win and freshman Brittani Williams won the javelin with a throw of 39.40m/129-03.
After four meets this season the Cougars have qualified six individuals and one relay team for the NCAA Regional in Des Moines, Iowa.
