HOUSTON - The University of Houston softball team heads into the home stretch of the regular season schedule at East Carolina for a critical Conference USA weekend series. The Cougars enter the weekend one win away from claiming their first C-USA regular season crown.
"East Carolina has proven that they are a solid team," head coach Kyla Holas said. "This will be our toughest road series in conference play. Our job is to win every series from here on out no matter what our magic number is."
The Cougars (35-14, 16-2 C-USA) have won 28 of their last 36 games. Five of the eight setbacks during the streak have come against Top 25 opponents. In fact, 11 of Houston's 14 losses this season have come to teams that are ranked with five of those losses coming by a single run.
East Carolina (34-16, 10-7 C-USA) won two of three games last weekend at UTEP and is in sole possession of second place in the league standings after being chosen to finish fifth in the C-USA preseason poll.
"A lot of their freshmen are stepping up in key situations and making the difference for them," Holas said. We're facing the reigning conference pitcher of the week in Toni Paisley. Our hitters need to be discipline at the plate and pick good pitches to hit. We also need to work on doing a better job of manufacturing runs in critical situations."
