HOUSTON - For only the second time in the history of the two programs, the University of Houston baseball team will face Princeton on the baseball diamond this weekend during a non-conference series at Cougar Field.
The series begins with 7 p.m. games on both Friday and Saturday before wrapping up at 1 p.m., Sunday. Cougar Baseball games can be heard live on UHCougars.com with former UH letterwinner Nick Torina calling the play-by-play action and Pat Cauley providing color analysis. To access the free broadcast, fans should click on the "Schedules and Results" link on the baseball main page. From there, fans can click on the "Audio Broadcasts" link, which will bring up the 2007 radio schedule.
Fans also can follow live stats via the Internet by clicking the "Gametracker" link on the UH front page or on the Cougar Baseball schedule page.
The Cougars come into the game on the heels of an impressive 7-1 win over Lamar on Tuesday. In that game, the Cougar hitters slugged their way to 11 hits, including four doubles, with junior outfielder Bryan Tully's 4-for-5 performance leading the way.
But the UH pitching may have been an even bigger story against the Cardinals. Facing a Lamar team batting .353 with all but one starter hitting higher than .300, the Cougar hurlers allowed only one unearned run off five hits with nine strikeouts in the win.
This weekend's series will be the first time since the 2000 NCAA Houston Regional that UH has faced the Tigers. Cougar fans will long remember that game as UH rallied from a 6-2 deficit late in the game and won on J.P. Woodward's solo, walk-off homer.
Freshman southpaw Wes Musick makes his team-leading sixth start of the 2007 campaign series Friday in the opener of the Princeton series. This season, Musick has posted a 2-3 record with 16 strikeouts and a 5.40 ERA in 23.1 innings.
He is the only Cougar hurler to enjoy more than one win this season, while his ERA, strikeouts and innings pitched are the second most on the staff.
In his last start, Musick held Northwestern State to three runs off seven hits with seven strikeouts in 6.1 inning during the middle game of that series on March 3. However, he collected the loss against the Demons.
Both his strikeouts and innings pitched totals were personal, single-game bests.
This will be the first time that the Cougars have met Princeton during the regular season.
Princeton (1-2) comes into the series after losing two of three games to Elon last weekend. The Tigers are slated to throw junior righthander Steven Miller in the series opener. This season, Miller has posted an 0-0 record with five strikeouts and a 0.00 ERA in four innings.
Infielder Greg Horn tops the Tigers with a .556 batting average, while outfielder Derek Beckman has posted a team-best five RBIs. Outfielder Andrew Doupe has recorded the team's only home run through the first three games.
