Track and Field Notches Three Wins at LSU Tiger Classic

HOUSTON -- The University of Houston track and field team traveled to Baton Rouge, La., Saturday for the LSU Tiger Classic. The Cougars finished the afternoon with three wins and five NCAA Regional Marks.
Houston swept the discus competition led by junior James Lee and freshman Ashley Bryant. Lee won the men's competition with a throw of 54.80m/179-09 and Bryant added a first place throw of 49.54m/162-06. Both set NCAA Regional qualifying marks with their wins. Junior Amanda Villanueva was the runner-up in the women's discus with a throw of 44.15m/144-10.
Bryant added a fifth place finish in the hammer with a throw of 42.34m/138-11.
Senior Ebonie Floyd qualified for the Regional in two events at the Tiger Classic. Her fourth place finish of 23.16 in the 200 meters was enough to punch her ticket to Des Moines, Iowa. She was also a member of the second place 4x400 meter relay team that finished with a time of 3:42.00. Floyd's teammates in the relay were senior Octavia Garrett, freshman Quin'shundolyn McPherson and sophomore LaNeeka Allen.
In other relay action the men's 4x400 team finished third with a time of 3:11.96 and the women's 4x100 team finished sixth.
In the men's high jump, junior Ivan Diggs finished second with after clearing 2.10m/6-10.75 to qualify for the Regional. Teammate senior Tristian Whitley added a fifth place finish.
In Saturday's distance events, freshman Daniel Martinez took third in the 1,500 meters with a time of 4:01.19. The women added three top five finished in the 1,500 meters with sophomore Jennifer Harper (second), junior Oumama Hallal (third) and junior Adrianne Guinn (fourth).
Guinn was also third in the 800 meters with Hallal coming in sixth and Keenan in eighth. sophomore Seun Adigun was sixth for the women in the 100 hurdles and sophomore LeeA'ndrea Robinson was seventh.
Junior Steve Magness won the 5,000 meters with a time of 14:21.49 and freshman Ahmed Harb was fourth. Freshman Jessica Cook was third in the 5,000 meters for the women with a time of 18:33.34.
Junior Kolee Latson finished fourth in the 400 meters with a time of 47.64 and junior Tremaine Smith was eighth in the 200 meters (21.34).
In other field events, freshman Dayo Ogunniyi was fourth in the long jump and freshman Hyleta Young was sixth. In the triple jump, McPherson was third and in the pole vault Houston was led by junior Ashley Ligon's third place finish.
On the men's side, freshman Alex Bentley was second in the pole vault after clearing 4.95m/16-02.75. Senior Nick Garza was sixth.
The Cougars were led in the hammer throw by senior Lucas Mireles who finished seventh with a throw of 39.50m/129-07 and sophomore Andy Tackett was ninth. In the triple jump competition, sophomore Thomas Orr finished fifth and sophomore Morgan Floyd was fifth in the javelin throw. Mireles also finished fourth in the shot put with a throw of 15.77m/51-09.00.
Houston will be back in action April 4-7 at the Texas Relays in Austin, Texas.
