HUNTSVILLE - Christa Raley, Haley Valis and Jessica Valis belted home runs as the University of Houston softball team tallied a 7-2 victory over Sam Houston State Wednesday afternoon in game one of a doubleheader at the SHSU Softball Complex.
Angel Shamblin recorded the win in the circle for UH and broke her own single season program record earning her 17th victory of the season. She was touched up for two runs on seven hits. The Florida native notched 10 strikeouts and now has 190 Ks on the season, also breaking her own program single season record.
The Cougars (26-11) jumped out to a 2-0 advantage as Christa Raley cranked a two-run homer in the first inning to score Jessica Valis, who reached on a leadoff double.
Sam Houston State responded in the home half of the frame stringing together three hits. Lauren Burns provided a RBI-single to left field to trim the deficit to 2-1.
Haley Valis struck with a three-run bomb in the third inning as Houston extended its lead to 5-1. Elaina Nordstrom and Raley set the table with a single and a double, respectively.
Jessica Valis added a two-run shot in the fourth inning after Angel Shamblin opened the frame with a leadoff walk pushing the Houston advantage to 7-1.
The Bearkats (14-16) got an RBI-single from Amanda Lindsey in the bottom half of the fourth for the final margin of 7-2.
