Track and Field Earns Five Wins at Tom Tellez Invitational

HOUSTON - The University of Houston track and field team took home four first place finishes during the second day of competition at the Tom Tellez Invitational on Saturday making a total of five wins for the Cougars for the weekend.
The Cougars earned their first top finish during Friday's competition when freshman Hyleta Young won the long jump with a jump of 5.82m/19-01.25.
Saturday's first win for Houston came with junior James Lee's first place throw of 53.30m/174-10 in the discus. Teammates sophomore Andy Tackett and freshman Brandon Hubbard added finishes of fourth and fifth place, respectively.
In his first meet since winning the pole vault at the C-USA Indoor Championships, freshman Alex Bentley was once again the top finisher in the pole vault competition clearing 5.05m/16-06.75. Freshman Courtney Beasley was sixth and senior Nick Garza seventh.
The women were led in the pole vault by senior Danielle Aanerud's second place clearance of 3.50m/11-05.75. She was followed in fourth by junior Ashley Ligon and freshman Kristina Escobar in sixth.
Freshman Quin'shundolyn McPherson earned a win in the triple jump with her leap of 11.79m/38-08.25. Senior Kelli Williams was fourth.
In the last event of the afternoon, the Houston men's 4x400 relay team came away with the win with a time of 3:12.74. In other relay action, the men's 4x100 team finished second with a time of 41.40.
In the 400 meters, LaNeeka Allen was fourth in the first section with a time of 57.91. For the men, freshman Justin Davis was second in the second section and freshman Pearson Crichlow won the third section.
Junior Tremaine Smith won the second section of the 100 meters with a time of 10.51. Freshman Dayo Ogunniyi and Young added a second and third place finish in the second section of the women's 100 meters.
Freshman Daryl Cloud was the sixth place finisher in the first section of the 400 meter hurdles with a time of 58.13. And in the 200 meters, sophomore LeeA'ndrea Robinson was third in the second section with a time of 26.39 and junior Kolee Latson was fifth in the first section (21.67) of the men's race.
Robinson was second in the 100 meter hurdles with a time of 14.29 and freshman Steven Jones and sophomore Neal McCarty finished fifth and sixth in the second section of the men's 110 meter hurdles
In the field events, junior Ivan Diggs and senior Tristian Whitley tied for fourth place in the high jump after clearing 2.10m/6-10.75.
In the distance events, sophomore Jennifer Harper finished third in the 1,500 meters (4:48.16) and Chris White was ninth (4:14.37)..
Junior Amanda Villanueva finished third in the hammer throw with a toss of 48.23m/158-03 and freshman Ashley Bryant was sixth. Bryant also added a second place throw in the discus (45.95m/150-09), while Villanueva was fourth.
On the men's side senior Lucas Mireles was the top finisher for the Cougars in the hammer throw with a third place toss of 40.31m/132-03. Hubbard and Tackett were sixth and seventh.
A new meet record of 2.21m/7-03.00 was set in the high jump. Will Littleton of UT-Pan America and Marcus Harris of Shore AC tied to set the record.
Saturday also featured the finals in the high school division with Kingwood High School winning the girl's competition with 191 points and Houston-Lamar High School winning the boy's competition with 145.50 points.
The Cougars will be back in action next weekend when they split for the TSU Relays on March 23-24 and the Texas Invitational on March 24.
