HOUSTON - The University of Houston softball team spent Saturday afternoon at its annual community service outing providing a free clinic at the East End Little League.
The Cougars instructed about 30 kids in a series of drills that showed proper fundamentals on hitting, defense and throwing techniques.
"It was an excellent experience for our team with this league being right in our backyard," head coach Kyla Holas said. "A lot of parents and coaches were out there with the girls. We were able to show them some drills that they can use in their daily practices. I hope that we've built a relationship that will benefit both of us."
Holas' team has had a history of taking an active part in the community. The Cougars spent an afternoon last season, spending time with animals at the Humane Society. In previous seasons, the squad has packed food at a local food bank, visited with children at a hospital and played softball with Special Olympics athletes.
"We've mixed up our community service over the years to show our team that there are so many ways to volunteer and there are a lot of areas that need volunteers," Holas said. "We try to keep branching out each year with the way that we serve."
