The Cougars put the first marks on the scoreboard in the fifth inning when Josh Stirneman led off with a towering home run to center field. Two batters later, Bryan Tully laced a triple into right field and scored on Pounds' RBI-double into left field. After a Zak Presley single through the left side put runners on the corner, Lormand lifted a sacrifice fly into center field to hand the Cougars a 4-0 advantage.
However, the Mavericks answered the next half-inning with two runs off their own, courtesy of Ben Burum's pinch-hit home run to center field.
UTA trimmed the Cougar lead down to a single run at 4-3 in the seventh inning when Lance Nobile's bases-loaded groundout allowed Mitch Putman to score from third base.
However, the Cougars broke the game open in the bottom of the frame with three runs. After being hit by a pitch to lead off and moving to second base following Presley's sacrifice bunt, Pounds scored easily on Lormand's RBI-single up the middle. Felix Fanaselle then plated Lormand with a double down the right-field line. Two batters later, Dustin Kingsbury slapped an RBI-single through the right side to score Fanaselle from third base for a 7-3 UH lead.
In the eighth inning, Luis Flores blasted an 0-2 offering over the wall in right center to give the Cougars an 8-3 lead and cap the scoring for the day.
