Track and Field Completes Day One at Houston Invitational

HOUSTON -- The Houston track and field team returned home Friday for the two-day Houston Invitational. Friday's competition featured the heptathlon and pentathlon events, the 200 meter and 400 meter "B" finals, and the distance medley relay.
In the women's pentathlon, senior Rachel Easley finished second. The Duncanville, Texas native set an NCAA provisional mark with 3,877 points and currently ranks 12th in Division I. Her point total ranks third all-time in UH history and sets a new personal best. Freshman Brittani Williams also competed in the pentathlon for the Cougars and finished sixth (3,269 points). Fumni Jimoh who competed unattached won the event.
Five Cougars competed in the men's heptathlon. After the first day of competition, junior Jarrett Flax leads the way with 2,847 points. Also competing is sophomore Morgan Floyd (third), senior Nick Garza (fifth), freshman Wesley Bray (seventh), and sophomore Neal McCarty (12th). The heptathlon will conclude Saturday with the pole vault, 60-meter hurdles and the 1,000 meter run.
In the pole vault, junior Ashley Ligon finished sixth clearing 3.50m/11-05.75 and freshman Kristina Escobar finished 16th (3.20m/10-06.00).
The final event of the afternoon was the distance medley relay. For the women, Houston finished fifth with a time of 12:22.48. Winning the race was Lamar. On the men's side, the Cougars finished first with a time of 10:04.60, in a close race with Lamar who second.
