HOUSTON - The University of Houston tennis team lost 7-0 against No. 47 LSU Monday afternoon at Hoff Courts on the UH campus.
"Despite falling behind early in all of our matches, our team fought hard to the end," head coach John Severance said. "I was proud of the way we played (each match) to the end. This is a valuable learning experience that will pay dividends later this season."
The Cougars (7-3) opened the match, dropping the doubles point for only the second time this season. Lindsay Willeford and Leila Salek lost a hard-fought 8-4 decision in the No. 3 position.
Leila Salek and Sonja Nikolic each played strong second sets after falling in the opening set. Salek fought back from a 4-2 second set hole and evened the score at 4-4 before falling 6-4. Nikolic also dug out of an early deficit before drawing even at 3-3, but her momentum was stopped as her opponent claimed the final three games of the match.
Vicky Simpson forced a three-set in her match after winning the second set 6-2 on court six. The England native fell behind 4-2 in the final set but charged back to 5-4 before getting broken on her serve to lose the match.
The Cougars take on Texas A&M-Corpus Christi Thursday afternoon. Doubles action is set to begin at noon. Admission is free to Hoff Courts.
