HOUSTON - Angel Shamblin fired a one-hitter and provided a two-run homer in the sixth inning as the University of Houston softball team opened the Crowne Plaza Classic with a 2-0 victory over Texas State Thursday evening at the Cougar Softball Stadium.
After allowing two walks in the first inning, Shamblin rebounded to retire 19 of the last 20 batters she faced. The Florida native had a stretch where she set down 15 consecutive batters until a single in the sixth inning broke up the no-hitter. The base runner was immediately erased, attempting to steal second base on the next pitch.
The reigning Conference USA Pitcher of the Week struck out 10 batters and has recorded double-digit strikeouts in both of her starts this season. With the shutout, she lowered her ERA to 0.28.
Shamblin also broke a 0-for-14 slump at the plate in the sixth inning with a two-run homer over the leftfield fence. Elaina Nordstrom drew a walk with one out in the frame.
Jessica Valis extended her hitting streak to six games. She is the only Cougar to hit safely in all six games.
Houston continues the Crowne Plaza Classic Friday evening with tilts slated against No. 5 LSU and Missouri State. First pitch against the Tigers is scheduled for 7pm. Admission is free to the Cougar Softball Stadium this weekend.
