HOUSTON - The University of Houston football team began preparations for this weekend's key showdown at Conference USA rival Tulsa with a solid workout Tuesday afternoon on the UH practice fields.
Under partly cloudy skies and mild temperatures, the Cougars worked out for a little over an hour. Coming off a rare Sunday game, the Cougars held a light workout but remained impressive with their performances, head coach Art Briles said.
With a Sunday night game, it has thrown our schedule off a bit," said Briles, who is in his fifth season at UH. "Today we just tried to come out, familiarize ourselves with Tulsa, work the soreness out and move forward."
The Cougars will face the Golden Hurricane at 2 p.m., Saturday at H.A. Chapman Stadium in Tulsa, Okla. Fans can hear Saturday's game live on 790 AM The Sports Animal with Tom Franklin calling the play-by-play action, Ted Pardee providing color analysis and Chuck Brown reporting from the sideline. The pregame show is slated to begin one hour before kickoff.
Fans also can follow live stats over the Internet by clicking the Gametracker link at UHCougars.com.
This weekend's game will go a long way in determining the C-USA West Division representative at the C-USA Championship Game on Dec. 1. A Cougar win gives UH its second straight division crown and the chance to defend its 2006 title in the C-USA Championship Game.
If Tulsa wins, the two teams will drop into a tie in the loss column with the Golden Hurricane holding the tiebreaker over the Cougars.
With three bowl games during the last four years and the 2006 C-USA championship under their belts, the Cougars are no strangers to critical games, Briles said.
"Our guys know how to play a big game. We have proven that over the years," Briles said. "I am very confident about how our players will perform Saturday."
