HOUSTON - The University of Houston football team held practice today in pads and helmets on the UH Practice Fields in preparation for a Sunday match-up against the SMU Mustangs.
The Cougars practiced under sunny skies and pleasant weather in preparation for Sunday's game. The team is taking advantage of the extra day of preparation, following a Wednesday practice schedule.
"In the football world today is Wednesday for us. It was a good Wednesday workout for us. We got a lot accomplished and we are starting to get our freshness back from being on the road a couple weeks. The guys are anxious and ready to go Sunday," head coach Art Briles.
Briles says the extra day has given the team the change to heal and refresh, something that is so important at this stage of the season.
"We are coming off two road games where we got in late and it's comforting to know we are going to be back at home at Robertson Stadium.
"It is coming at a good time. It is letting us recoup and recharge and get ready to get after it," Briles said.
The Cougars will hold practice Friday and Saturday in anticipation of their return to Robertson Stadium.
"Tomorrow will be like a Thursday (practice) and Saturday will be like a Friday (practice) and then we will play Sunday. So we are just a day behind in the football world as opposed to the real world. We are in good shape. Our guys that are banged up are feeling better so we like the direction of our team."
Houston will face SMU Sunday in a nationally televised game at 7pm on ESPN. This is the fourth time the Cougars will play on television in front of a home crowd. Houston is 2-1 in those contests defeating Rice and Colorado State and falling to ECU.
Fans can hear Sunday's game live on 790 AM The Sports Animal with Tom Franklin calling the play-by-play action, David Klingler providing color analysis and Chuck Brown reporting from the sideline. The pre-game show is slated to begin one hour before kickoff.
