HOUSTON - The University of Houston women's basketball team will play its lone exhibition game at 6 p.m. CDT Friday, taking on the Houston Jaguars on Guy V. Lewis Court at Hofhienz Pavilion.
Admission to the game is free.
Interim head coach Danny Hughes will lead the team while Joe Curl continues his recovery from a mild heart attack earlier this week.
Fans are encouraged to click here to send Coach Curl get-well wishes electronically.
Curl is still recuperating at Methodist Hospital in Houston.
The Cougars are led by C-USA Preseason Player of the Year Tye Jackson. Jackson is the nation's third-leading returning scorer after averaging 22.5 points per game last season.
She ranked behind only Western Kentucky's Crystal Kelly (24.1) and Oklahoma's Courtney Paris (23.5). Jackson missed UH's first six games last season with a knee injury, coming back to put together her second-straight First-Team All-C-USA season. She also led the team in assists, steals and blocked shots.
She will join with senior transfer Twiggy McIntyre (Sapulpa, Okla./Sapulpa HS/Kansas State) to form one of the most potent backcourts in the nation. In her last game at K-State, the 2006 WNIT Championship, McIntyre scored 16 points in 18 minutes to help secure the WNIT title for the Wildcats.
The Houston Jaguars were founded in 1997 as a travel team to help women's basketball players continue their post-collegiate careers and aspire to take their playing skills to the next level of professional achievement. The Jaguars compete against some of the top Division I colleges and universities each year, sometimes sending split squads to two schools in one night. They are coached by Louis Ray, who serves as UH's color analyst for home radio broadcasts.
The team has strong UH ties with four former Cougars on the 2007-08 roster. Daphne Andre, LaShinda Winters, Darla Simpson and Kiki Harris all are scheduled to be in attendance Friday night.
UH is scheduled to begin the 2007-08 season on Nov. 9 against Texas Southern. That game, scheduled for a 5:30 p.m. tipoff at Hofheinz Pavilion, will lead into the UH men's team season opener at 8 p.m. against Morehead State.
Tickets for all home games are now on sale online at www.UHCougars.com or in person at the UH Athletics Ticket Office. Season ticket packages start at $50 with single-game tickets pricing starting at $5.
