HOUSTON - The University of Houston football team finished up the final practice in helmets and practice jerseys on the UH Practice Field on Thursday before they head to El Paso, Texas to take on the Miners in a road conference game.
"It was a good workout," head coach Art Briles said. "We're just fine tuning everything we've worked on since Sunday. The main thing now is to tighten focus on our individual assignments, which in turn helps our team be successful. What we're doing is focusing on the small picture."
The Cougars are coming off a win over UAB. Houston dominated the Blazers on Legion Field in a 49-10 win in Birmingham. The win helped settle Houston at first place in the West division a half point ahead of UTEP. Coach Briles and the Cougars are not letting the fact that they're at the top go to their heads, however.
"We're totally aware of all the ramifications," Briles said, "but our job is to focus as an individual, focus as a team and play hard for sixty minutes. So that's what we're concentrating on this week."
Saturday's game at UTEP could play a pivotal role in determining the C-USA West Division champion as Houston returns home to play SMU on Sunday, Nov. 3, before playing at Tulsa on Nov. 10. The Cougars close out their regular season schedule with home games against Marshall on Nov. 17 and Texas Southern on Nov. 24.
"We understand that there are a lot of games left in conference play," Briles said. "We've come out of the gates pretty well but we know that this is a game where we need to play well for sixty minutes and gives us an opportunity to sit atop the West."
Cougars fans can hear Saturday's game at UTEP on 790 AM The Sports Animal with Tom Franklin calling the play-by-play action, Ted Pardee providing color analysis and Chuck Brown reporting from the sideline. The game is schedule to kickoff at 8:05 p.m. with a pre-game show slated to begin one hour before kickoff.
