HOUSTON - The University of Houston softball team finished its final fall tournament outscoring the opponents 34-5 and went 3-0 on the day to win the UH Round Robin on Saturday at the Cougar Softball Stadium.
"It was a very good weekend," head coach Kyla Holas said. "I'm very pleased with the way the team played. It felt like we were playing at our level instead of to the opponents."
The Cougars hit the field in game one for a shutout against Lamar with pitcher Samantha Cummings on the mound. Cummings had no runs on four hits, three walks, a hit by pitch and two strikeouts. The team dominated Lamar after they hit three homeruns in one inning and turned three doubleplays. Elaina Nordstrom went two for four with a double and a homerun. Haley Valis went one for two in the game with a homerun with Cummings adding the final homerun. Baillie Lot went two for two in her pitches with Katie Bush going two for three.
In game two against Victoria Babie Love and Angel Shamblin split the pitching, each going three innings. Love had zeros across the board while Shamblin had one run on one hit, two walks and four strikeouts. Haley Valis went two for two with a double with Shamblin going two for three with a double. Katy Beth Sherman also went two for three and Christa Raley had a double and the first stolen base of the day.
"We got a chance to really mix things up defensively," Holas said. "We gave everyone some innings at multiple positions, which was good for the team."
Houston posted another blowout over San Jacinto with the team compiling more impressive stats. Bush went three for three with two doubles, Jennifer Klinkert added one for three with a homerun and Cummings went one for three with the second stolen base of the day. Lott hit one for two, Courtney Spittler and Angela Spittler each had a single and Jessica Valis went one for three with a triple. Pitching was taken over by Lott for the game where she had one walk, four runs on seven hits and tournament high five strikeouts.
"We're going to use the off-week to get ahead in the classroom," Holas said, "and to treat some injuries before we get back to individuals next week."
The Cougars will kick of the regular season February 8-10 in the Houston Invitational being hosted at the Cougar Softball Stadium.
