HOUSTON, Texas - Four seniors instrumental in the Cougars' 2006 Conference USA Championship will have an opportunity to showcase their respective talents, as they participate in the Cornerstone Bancard Hula Bowl this Sunday, January 14. The game will be broadcast from Aloha Stadium in Honolulu, Hawaii, with kickoff on ESPN slated for 7:30 pm CST.
Cornerback Willie Gaston, free safety Will Gulley, nose tackle Marquay Love and wide receiver Vincent Marshall are members of the Kai Team, which face off against members of the Aina Team. Gaston will wear number #27 and Marshall will don #21, while both Gulley (#18) and Love (#99) will sport the numbers they wore while playing at UH.
Gulley was a consensus member of the Conference USA First Team in 2006, and was named the C-USA Defensive Player of the Year by the Houston Chronicle. Gaston, Love and Marshall were members of the C-USA Second Team, and Marshall was the MVP of the Conference USA Championship Game in the Cougars' 34-20 win over Southern Miss on Dec. 1.
The last time a Cougar took part in the Hula Bowl was 2004, when former UH center and current Miami Dolphin Rex Hadnot enhanced his draft status with an outstanding postseason performance. Only two other times in Houston history has at least four Cougars played in one All-Star affair; the 1968 (RB Paul Gipson, DT Cliff Larson, OT Chuck Odom & DB Johnny Peacock) and 1989 (RB Kimble Anders, SS Alton Montgomery, DT Alfred Oglesby & DE Craig Veasey) Blue-Gray All-Star Games.
