HOUSTON - Courtney Gaines (Sugar Land, Texas/Clements HS) netted her first-career hat trick and tied a school record with eight points, leading The University of Houston soccer team to a 12-0 win over Texas Southern Wednesday on John O'Quinn Field at Robertson Stadium.
Houston snapped a two-game losing streak, moving to 3-2 on the season and 3-0 all-time versus TSU (0-1).
With the hat trick, Gaines moved her 2006 goal total to five, nearly doubling her tally of three from a year ago. Her pair of assists on the evening equaled her season total from 2005. Gaines' eight points ties the school record shared by Nikki Hawkins and Sophia Mundy (Katy, Texas/St. Pius X/Portland State).
Sarah Fisher (Katy, Texas/Cypress Springs HS) opened up the scoring in the fourth minute, chipping a volley from Gaines above Texas Southern goalkeeper Keisha McDaniel's head. Nikki Echeverria (Sugar Land, Texas/Clements HS) added her first collegiate goal 90 seconds later, placing the ball inside the left post, past a diving McDaniel, off two strong passes from Fisher and Amie Brady (Houston, Texas/Katy HS). Brady finished the night with three assists.
Jordan Godbolt (Austin, Texas/Travis HS) added her fourth score of the season in the seventh minute. Godbolt, in the box and in front of the keeper, had a tap-in of a rebound in front of McDaniel. Fisher added her second goal of the night in the 15th minute, again off a volley from Gaines.
Gaines added the first of her trio in the 17th minute. She received the ball from Echeverria, turned and banked it in off the right post. Maegan Kiphart (Parker, Colo./Chaparral HS) hit a one-timer into the back of the net off a corner kick from Brady in the 24th minute, knocking in her first score of the season.
Heather Williams (Valrico, Fla./Durant HS) slotted a goal into the right corner after a long run through the box in the 28th minute. Mundy got on the board in the 38th minute, knocking a shot into the back of the net from point-blank range after a service from Brittney Pfeiffer (Sugar Land, Texas/Austin HS).
Stephanie Masci (Houston, Texas/Langham Creek HS) added UH's ninth goal of the half in the 39th minute, heading a deflection past TSU's Abimbola Telufusi, who relieved McDaniel in both halves.
Gaines knocked in her second and third scores in the first five minutes of the second half, both coming off of balls from Mundy. Her second of the night came in the 48th minute as the sophomore headed in a Mundy cross that came from the right side. Mundy ended up on the right end line after a long run through the TSU defense. Gaines' last goal was in the 49th minute after her shot from the right side squeezed past McDaniel and over the line.
Pfeiffer added the final tally of the night with a diving header off a Brady cross in the 78th minute. UH closed out the night with 44 shots, compared to one for the Lady Tigers. McDaniel made two saves, taking the loss and Telufusi stopped four shots.
UH's Shelby Scott (Mesquite, Texas/North Mesquite HS) earned her third win of the season and was spelled by both Lynn Baker (Orland Park, Ill./Sandburg HS) and Cam Stratton (Houston, Texas/Humble HS) who made her collegiate debut. Melissa Mullis (Georgetown, Texas/Georgetown HS) also made her first appearance in the scarlet and white, seeing extensive time in the midfield.
UH heads out for a three-game road swing that begins at TCU on Sunday at 1 p.m. CDT. The Cougars also face road tests against Stephen F. Austin and UTSA on Sept. 15 and Sept. 17, respectively.
