HOUSTON - Courtney Gaines (Sugar Land, Texas/Clements HS) and Sophia Mundy (Katy, Texas/St. Pius X/Portland State) each scored two goals as the University of Houston soccer team closed out non-conference play with a 4-1 win over Texas State, Sunday on John O'Quinn Field at Robertson Stadium.
Houston (6-4), winners of its past three games, opens up Conference USA action next weekend at home, facing Southern Miss and UCF, Friday at 7 p.m. and Sunday at 1 p.m., respectively.
The Cougars six non-league wins are the most in the program's nine-year history. The previous best was five, set a year ago. The program's best single-season mark for overall victories is 11, set in both 1998 and 1999.
Mundy opened up the scoring in the ninth minute, heading a cross by Gaines past Bobcats' goalkeeper Samantha Fraser. Gaines took the ball to the touch line and sent it into the box where a streaking Mundy put a head on it and sent it on goal.
Gaines added a goal of her own in the 16th minute off a penalty kick. She slotted the penalty to the left side of the net, past Fraser. The penalty was set up by a foul on Mundy in the box. UH had 11 shots in the period, compared to seven for Texas State and entered the break with a 2-0 lead.
After the half, Mundy struck again in the 56th minute. With the ball on the right side of the box, Mundy pulled Fraser off her line and sent the ball to the left corner of the net. It was Mundy's fifth-career multiple-goal game and gives her seven on the season. Mundy is in sole possession of second place on the career scoring chart and needs six to equal Nikki Hawkins' (2001-04) career mark of 27.
Gaines added her eighth of the season in the 63rd minute off a brilliant play from 25 yards out. She lofted a rocket shot that flew under the crossbar and into the back of the net. It was her second-career multiple-goal game. She finished with a hat trick in UH's 12-0 win over Texas Southern on Sept. 6. Gaines has 11 career goals and is tied for eighth-place all-time with Ashley Fortenberry (1999-2002).
Shelby Scott (Mesquite, Texas/North Mesquite HS) made eight saves and moved her season record to 6-4. Fraser took the loss for the Bobcats, making eight saves during the game.
