HOUSTON - On the heels of a stunning 34-25 win over Oklahoma State and the program's first 4-0 start since 1990, the University of Houston football team received votes in both the Associated Press and USA Today weekly national football polls Sunday.
The Cougars earned five votes in the AP poll and three in the USA Today poll. The AP poll is voted on by sportswriters around the country while the USA Today poll is voted on the USA Today board of coaches, made up of 62 head football coaches at NCAA Division I-A institutions.
This is the first time since 2003 that Houston has earned votes in either of the weekly national polls. That season, UH received one vote in the AP poll after a 5-1 start to the season. This is only the second time since 1991 UH has received votes in either poll.
Senior quarterback Kevin Kolb threw for 313 yards and four touchdowns to lead Houston to a 34-25 win over Oklahoma State on Saturday night in front of 28, 260 fans at Robertson Stadium. Kolb, a Heisman Trophy candidate, had touchdown passes of 42, 33, 27 and seven yards and was 21-of-28 for the game. The crowd was the third-largest in Robertson Stadium history.
Next up for the Cougars is a matchup with the Miami Hurricanes at 5 p.m. CDT on Saturday. The game will be televised nationally on ESPN2. Miami is 1-2 on the season.
Saturday's game from the Orange Bowl can be heard live on ESPN 790 AM with the pregame show beginning one hour before kickoff. Tom Franklin will handle the play-by-play duties, while former record-setting UH quarterback David Klingler will provide color analysis.
