2006 Houston Cougars Football Postgame Notes
Oklahoma State Cowboys (3-1, 0-0 Big 12) at Houston Cougars (4-0, 2-0 C-USA)
Saturday, Sept. 23, 2006 * Robertson Stadium * Houston, Texas
** With Saturday's win, the Cougars improved to 4-0 to open the season... It marked the first time since 1990 that the Cougars won their first four games of a season... That 1990 UH squad opened the year 8-0.
** Saturday's attendance of 27,302 was a 2006 season high and the third largest crowd in the history of Robertson Stadium... It also was the biggest home crowd at John O'Quinn Field at Robertson Stadium since 31,784 fans watched Texas take a 53-26 win over the Cougars on Sept. 29, 2001... The Houston-Miami (Fla.) game drew 36,698 fans on Sept. 23, 2004, but that game was played at Reliant Stadium.
** In the last two home games, the Cougars have drawn 55,562 fans to the friendly confines of John O'Quinn Field at Robertson Stadium... That was the second-biggest, two-game home attendance total since UH drew 55,769 combined fans against Rice (23,985 on Sept. 1, 2001) and against Texas (31,784 on Sept. 22, 2001).
** With Saturday's win, the Cougars improved to 9-8-1 (.528) in the all-time series against Oklahoma State.
** Houston improved to 60-74-8 (.451) all-time against teams from the Big 12 Conference and snapped an eight-game losing streak to teams from the Big 12 Conference. The Cougars' last victory over a Big 12 opponent was a 31-7 win at Missouri on Sept. 17, 1988.
** Houston improved to 76-84-4 (.476) in the month of September.
** Houston improved to 25-25-1 (.500) all-time against teams from the state of Oklahoma.
** Houston improved to 6-4-1 (.591) all-time when playing on Sept. 23.
** The Cougars' 15-play drive that consumed 7:03 in the first quarter were season longs in both categories.
** With 509 yards of total offense, the Cougars topped the 500-yard mark for the 11th time and surpassed the 400-yard mark for the 26th time under head coach Art Briles.
** With a touchdown on their opening drive, the Cougars scored a TD on their opening drive for the third consecutive game.
** Senior quarterback Kevin Kolb made the 40th consecutive start of his career.
** With four touchdown passes, senior quarterback Kevin Kolb recorded his fourth straight game in 2006 with multi-TD passes and the 21st multi-touchdown game of his career... It also marked the first time during the 2006 season and the fourth time in his career that he passed for four touchdowns in a game.
** With 313 passing yards, senior quarterback Kevin Kolb recorded the 13th 300-yard passing game of his career... Kolb tied David Klingler (1988-91) for first place in UH history in career 300-yard passing games... The Cougars are 4-8 (.333) all time in games in which Kolb throws for at least 300 yards.
** With 28 pass attempts, senior quarterback Kevin Kolb moved past David Klingler (1,262 attempts, 1988-91) into second place in UH career history and finished the night with 1,268 career pass attempts... Up next in the UH records book is Jason McKinley, who set a school record with 1,388 pass attempts from 1997-00.
** With four touchdowns, senior quarterback Kevin Kolb moved past Andre Ware (81 TDR, 1987-89) into second place in UH career history and finished the night with 84 touchdowns responsible for... Up next in the UH records book is David Klingler who was responsible for 93 touchdowns from 1988-91.
** With 355 yards of total offense (313 passing, 42 rushing), senior quarterback Kevin Kolb moved past Memphis quarterback Danny Wimprine (10,634 yards, 2001-04) into third place in Conference USA career history.. Kolb finished the night with 10,987 yards of total offense (10,348 passing, 639 rushing) during his career... Up next in the C-USA records book is Cincinnati quarterback Gino Guidugli, who compiled 11,661 yards of total offense from 2001-04.
** Senior quarterback Kevin Kolb's 33-yard touchdown pass to sophomore tight end at the 7:32 mark of the second quarter marked the 19th different receiver that Kolb has connected with on a touchdown pass.
** With his reception on the Cougars' second drive, senior wide receiver Vincent Marshall recorded a reception in his 40th consecutive game.
** With one touchdown reception, senior wide receiver Vincent Marshall moved into a tie with Ken Hebert (1965-67) for 10th place in UH career history with 22 career touchdowns... Up next in the UH records book is Brandon Middleton who recorded 24 touchdown catches from 1999-03.
** With 108 rushing yards, senior running back Jackie Battle recorded the second 100-yard rushing game of his career... It was his first 100-yard rushing game since leading UH with 125 rushing yards at Hawai'i during the 2003 Sheraton Hawai'i Bowl on Dec. 25, 2003.
** Sophomore tight end Mark Hafner's 33-yard touchdown reception at the 7:32 mark of the second quarter was his first career touchdown.
** With two field goals, sophomore kicker Ben Bell recorded the fourth game of his collegiate career with at least two field goals.
** Senior punter Justin Laird's punt around the 5:30 mark of the fourth quarter was his first punt in the Cougars' last 134:20 of action... Prior to his punt against the Cowboys, Laird's previous punt was a 39-yard kick around the 3:50 mark of the third quarter against Tulane on Sept. 9, 2006.
