HOUSTON - 2006 Houston Cougars Football Postgame Notes
Grambling State Tigers (0-2, 0-1 SWAC) at Houston Cougars (3-0, 2-0 C-USA)
Saturday, Sept. 16, 2006 * Robertson Stadium * Houston, Texas
** With Saturday's win, the Cougars improved to 3-0 to open the season... It marked the first time since 1990 that the Cougars won their first three games of a season... That 1990 UH squad opened the year 8-0.
** With Saturday's win, the Cougars improved to 9-0 all-time against Division I-AA opponents... Saturday's game was the first time since Sept. 10, 2005 in a 31-10 win over Sam Houston State that the Cougars faced a Division I-AA opponent.
** The 28 points scored by the Cougars in the second quarter were the most scored by UH in a single period since scoring 28 points in the first quarter against Louisiana-Lafayette on Oct. 3, 1992, at Rice Stadium.
** Saturday's attendance of 27,302 was a 2006 season high and the biggest home crowd at John O'Quinn Field at Robertson Stadium since 31,784 fans watched Texas take a 53-26 win over the Cougars on Sept. 29, 2001... The Houston-Miami (Fla.) game drew 36,698 fans on Sept. 23, 2004, but that game was played at Reliant Stadium
** Saturday's game was the first meeting between the Cougars and Grambling State on the gridiron.
** Houston improved to 75-84-4 (.472) in the month of September.
** Houston improved to 20-10 (.667) all-time against teams from the state of Louisiana.
** Houston improved to 2-4 (.333) all-time when playing on Sept. 16.
** With 42 points, the Cougars topped the 40-point milestone for the ninth time under head coach Art Briles... It also was the second consecutive game in 2006.
** With 484 yards of total offense, the Cougars topped the 400-yard mark for the 25th time under head coach Art Briles.
** With a touchdown on their opening drive, the Cougars scored a TD on their opening drive for the third consecutive game.
** Grambling State's touchdown in the first quarter was the first points scored by a UH opponent in the opening quarter during the 2006 season.
** With 27 completions, senior quarterback Kevin Kolb moved past David Klingler (726 completions, 1988-91) into second place in UH career history with 745... Up next in the UH records book is Jason McKinley who completed 786 passes from 1997-00.
** With his 19-yard touchdown pass to senior tight end Rodney Hannah at the 6:02 mark of the second quarter and his 5-yard touchdown strike to senior wide receiver Biren Ealy, senior quarterback Kevin Kolb completed a touchdown pass to the 17th and 18th different receivers during his career... That topped the previous UH career record of 17 different receivers, set by Jason McKinley from 1997-00.
** With 297 passing yards, senior quarterback Kevin Kolb moved past the 10,000-yard milestone during his career... The Stephenville, Texas, native already ranks as the UH career record holder in that category and finished the night with 10,035 career passing yards.
** With two touchdown passes, senior quarterback Kevin Kolb recorded his third straight game in 2006 with multi-TD passes and the 20th multi-touchdown game of his career.
** Senior quarterback Kevin Kolb made the 39th consecutive start of his career.
** With three rushing touchdowns, senior running back Jackie Battle recorded the fourth multi-touchdown game of his career... It was his first multi-touchdown game since rushing for two scores on Oct. 26, 2005, at Mississippi State... It also was his most rushing touchdowns in one game since scoring three times at Hawai'i during the Sheraton Hawai'i Bowl on Dec. 25, 2003.
** With his reception on the Cougars' opening drive, senior wide receiver Vincent Marshall recorded a reception in his 39th consecutive game.
** Senior tight end Rodney Hannah's 19-yard touchdown reception at the 6:02 mark of the second quarter was the first touchdown catch of his Cougar collegiate career.
** Senior wide receiver Biren Ealy's touchdown reception at the 10:22 mark of the third quarter was the first touchdown of his UH career... It also was the seventh touchdown of his collegiate career after scoring six times during three seasons at Arizona.
** Senior running back Roy Otis' 12-yard run on the Cougars' opening drive of the second half was the longest of his career... It topped his previous best of seven yards set at Rice during the season opener on Sept. 2, 2006.
