Farmer's 29 Kills Carry Volleyball Past New Mexico

WACO - Justine Farmer ripped a career-best 29 kills to go along with 10 digs, as the University of Houston volleyball team outlasted New Mexico (24-30, 30-27, 30-26, 30-19) Friday afternoon at the Clarion Invitational on the Baylor campus.
Houston (4-1) was headlined by Farmer, who powered home a .400 attack percentage, after matching her previous career-high of 24 kills against UALR earlier today. The El Paso native surpassed the 500-career kill mark in game two and compiled her fourth double-double in five matches this season.
Kelsey King continued her strong play, dishing out a match-high 56 assists to go along with 10 digs for her second consecutive double-double. She fueled Kelly McAnelly to 12 kills. McAnelly now has 1,174 career kills moving past Michelle Frazier (1997-2000) for the No. 7 spot. The Houston native is 20 kills away from tying Karen Bell (1988-91) for the No. 6 position.
Becca Sartori slapped 11 kills and added four blocks, while Ashley Calhoun picked up a match-best 22 digs to anchor the back row. The freshman libero has notched double-digit digs in four of her first five matches. Kinsey Cave equaled a career-best tacking on seven kills, while Sunshine Misa-Uli notched six kills and totaled a career-best five blocks.
Sarah Kwasigroch tallied 44 assists, 10 digs and five blocks for New Mexico (1-3). Kelly Therkelsen and Jennifer Heasty paced the Lobos with 10 kills apiece.
Despite a nine-kill performance by Farmer in the opening game, the Cougars dropped a 30-24 decision. The Lobos hit .342 in game one, garnering seven kills from Heasty. With New Mexico ahead 19-17, the Lobos strung together four consecutive points capped by back-to-back kills from Rose Morris.
Houston continued to ride Farmer's right arm in game two. Down 24-20, the Cougars finished the game on a 10-3 run. Farmer supplied three kills during the spurt to even the match at one game apiece.
New Mexico jumped out to an early 5-1 lead in game three behind three aces from Allison Suiter. The Cougars fought back and tied the score at 14-14. Houston eventually grabbed a 21-19 advantage and got four key points on Calhoun's serve to stretch the score to 25-19. The Cougars held off the Lobos for a critical 30-26 game three victory.
The Cougars once again used a run on Calhoun's serve in the fourth game to build an early 14-9 edge. After a Lobo sideout, Krystal Schulle came off the bench and provided five consecutive points to put the game out of reach at 18-10. The Cougars closed out the match with its best hitting percentage on the afternoon at a .282 clip and a 30-19 win.
Houston takes on Louisiana-Monroe and host Baylor Saturday to conclude the Clarion Invitational. First serve against the Warhawks is scheduled for 10am with an approximately 2:30pm start on-tap against the Bears. Live stats are available for both matches on UHCougars.com
