HOUSTON - The University of Houston volleyball team took the first steps towards the 2006 season with a strong practice session Wednesday morning at the Athletics/Alumni Center.
The Cougars worked out for a little over two hours and spent the session working on passing and serving.
"We really emphasized first contact skills because they are the most important," head coach Bill Walton said. "The more quality the first contact is, the easier the second and third contact will be. It's like Kevin Kolb dropping back to pass and not getting any protection. If you constantly have to scramble, you're not able to run your offense. The more our team is in our system, the better off we will be."
Houston returns to the practice court later this evening at 7pm. The Cougars will have a 2-2-1 practice schedule followed by a day off leading up to the season opener.
"Our goal is to continue to stay fresh and have practices full of intensity like this morning," Walton said. "We were good to go. Balls were going everywhere and there wasn't much down time."
The 2006 season kicks off with the first of three road tournaments at the Towson Invitational. The Cougars face off against host Towson (Aug. 26), No. 23 Ohio State (Aug. 26) and Robert Morris (Aug. 27) in the opening weekend of the season.
