Houston, Texas - The first week of fall camp came to a close today for the University of Houston, and despite the hot and humid conditions this morning, the Cougars practices for almost two-and-a-half hours on the UH Practice Fields. The Cougars will take tomorrow off before resuming Week Two on Monday afternoon.
UH head coach Art Briles, who is beginning his fourth season at the helm of the Cougar Football program, believes Houston is on the right track after three workouts.
"We've had three really good workouts," Briles said. "It is kind of hard to assess but easy to visualize. Visually, we look good and our attitude is great, and our hunger is intense. And, we have a determined look.
"Assessing it from a schematic standpoint and a playing standpoint are a little bit different creature. We have the intangibles in place. Now, we have to make sure we get the tangibles there to match them."
One intangible that Briles and his staff have been impressed with is the conditioning of the Cougar players, something Briles attributes to a great strength and conditioning program under new head strength coach Larry Jackson.
"It has been a little sticky," Briles added, "but (the team's good conditioning) that goes back to Coach Jackson and Coach (Chad) Dennis in our offseason strength program this summer. These guys have worked hard to get where we're at, and now, we have to make sure we maintain it and improve on it."
After taking Sunday off, the Cougars return to the practice fields at 4:30 pm on Monday, August 7.
