HOUSTON - Former University of Houston football player David Bearden was killed Sunday afternoon in a traffic accident in northeast Harris County reported by Sheriff's deputies.
He was driving west on the 16400 block of the East Freeway during a rainstorm when his pickup hydroplaned, investigators believe, on a patch of water under the Crockett bridge, according to a report published on the Houston Chronicle's website earlier today.
Bearden, who turned 40 in June, was a four-year letterwinner with the Cougars from 1985-88. During the 1986 season, Bearden started all 11 games and was the sixth top tackler on the Cougar defense with a total of 67, including 47 unassisted stops. In 1985, he scored a touchdown by falling on a blocked punt in the end zone against Baylor.
After his playing career, Bearden was an off-duty narcotics officer with the Houston Police Department. He is survived by wife Mary, and two sons David, Jr. and Marcus.
A viewing will be held from 3-9pm Thursday. Funeral services will be held at 11am Friday at Winser Village Church (6000 Heatherbrook Drive, Houston, Texas, 77085). Bearden will be buried at the Houston Memorial Gardens in Pearland.
The Houston Police Department has set up an account for Bearden from the Assist the Officer fundation. The address and contact information is below.
