HOUSTON - University of Houston Director of Athletics Dave Maggard today announced that UH and Grambling State University will hold a press conference on Thursday, August 24th, to promote the Cougar-Tiger football game that will be played at John O¹Quinn Field at Robertson Stadium on September 16.
Held at Drexler¹s Bar-B-Que, 2300 Pierce Street in Houston, the 11:30 am press conference will include head coaches Art Briles (Houston) and Melvin Spears (Grambling State), as well as former UH head coach Bill Yeoman, GSU Offensive Coordinator Sammy White, Maggard and Grambling Band Director Larry Pernell. Fans of both teams are encouraged to attend.
³This is a game we have been trying to put together for some time,² said Maggard. ³This is an exciting new venture for us and for the entire Houston community. Grambling brings great history and football tradition and is well known throughout the country. Grambling caliber of football has had many great players over the years and last year they were SWAC Champions with a number of fine athletes returning to the team this year.
³Geographically the game makes a lot of sense. There are many Grambling alumni in and around the Houston area that are looking forward to a full weekend of activities around the game. I believe this is a game and event the entire community will support, and we expect a full Robertson Stadium to share in the fun and excitement.²
The September 16 game is the first-ever meeting between Houston and Grambling State. The Cougars took part in the 2005 Fort Worth Bowl, while the Tigers captured the SWAC Championship last season.
