HOUSTON - The University of Houston volleyball team completed a five game scrimmage Friday afternoon at the Athletics/Alumni Center.
"There are going always going to be some good things and bad things anytime you have a first scrimmage," head coach Bill Walton. "I thought our blocking was excellent. That's a skill we really want to improve on this season, and we took the first steps to doing that this afternoon. "
Walton mixed up the teams and for the first two games it was a true mix of newcomers and veterans on both squads. In the last three games, it was the veterans against the newcomers with the veterans coming away victorious in all three games.
The season opener is only eight days away and there are a few things that Walton would like to see his squad tighten up before the first match.
"Kelsey had some good backsets but overall I thought we had too many tight sets," Walton said. "I would also like to see us serve tougher and get our sideout offense up to around 90 percent."
The 2006 season kicks off with the first of three road tournaments at the Towson Invitational. The Cougars face off against host Towson (Aug. 26), No. 23 Ohio State (Aug. 26) and Robert Morris (Aug. 27) in the opening weekend of the season.
