Mundy Named C-USA Preseason Offensive Player Of The Year

DALLAS - University of Houston senior midfielder Sophia Mundy (Katy, Texas/St. Pius X HS/Portland State) was named the Conference USA Preseason Soccer Offensive Player Of The Year, the league office announced today.
As a result of the award, Mundy earned an automatic slot on the Preseason All-C-USA Team. Rice's Beth Martin was named the C-USA Preseason Defensive Player of the Year.
It is the first time a UH player has taken the league's top preseason honor. Mundy, who established herself as one of the top players in C-USA last season, set single-season records for goals (14), points (33) and shots (95) in her first season with the Cougars, earning All-C-USA First Team and NSCAA/adidas All-Central Region Third Team honors. She also participated in a training camp for the U.S. U-21 Women's National Team, the first-ever UH player to do so.
"To be thought of as such a dynamic player in the conference is a great honor for Sophia," Houston head coach Bill Solberg said. "I believe that when an individual on any team wins an award, it speaks volumes about the team. Sophia needs to keep working hard and keep the players around her involved. She worked extremely hard all summer to come in fit and prepared for an incredible year. Hopefully this is the start of many accolades for her and this team."
The Cougars begin 2006 with a pair of home matches at John O' Quinn Field at Robertson Stadium. UH takes on Louisiana-Lafayette 7 p.m., Aug. 25 and Baylor at 1 p.m., Aug. 27.
