Houston - On one of the hottest days this summer, the University of Houston had not one, but two practices as the Cougars prepare for the 2006 season. UH registered its first two-a-day practice of the preseason, working out primarily with special teams in the morning, and then returning to the field in shorts and shoulder pads for the afternoon practice.
The Cougars also took time out of their busy day to attend the Cougar Pride Football Kickoff Luncheon that was held in the Yeoman Field House.
Even with this busy day, UH head coach Art Briles seemed pleased with the overall performance under adverse conditions.
"It is going good," said Briles, "especially with two-a-days today. We're trying to get our minds refreshed and adapted to the mental aspect of the game, so it's a good test for us both mentally and physically."
With the hot and humid conditions, Briles and his staff are overtly aware of how each player responds to the environment.
"We're always concerned with the conditions," added the fourth-year head coach. "We make sure they're hydrated enough and that everyone's in good shape physically. (Head athletic trainer ) Doc (Mike) O'Shea does a great job of monitoring that for us, and our guys are smart enough to know when they start getting to the edge."
Houston returns to the practice fields tomorrow, practicing just once beginning at 2:20 pm. The Cougars are slated to hold a scrimmage at John O'Quinn Field at Robertson Stadium on Friday, but that event will be closed to the public.
