HOUSTON - University of Houston sophomore righthander Ricky Hargrove was honored Monday as the Conference USA Pitcher of the Week.
Hargrove, who collected the league's weekly honor for the first time in his career, struck out a career-high nine batters with no walks to help lead the 10th-ranked Cougars to a 6-2 win over UCF in the middle game of a C-USA series on Saturday at Cougar Field.
The Katy, Texas, native allowed only one earned run in 8.1 innings of work with no runs during the final 5.2 frame. With the win, he improved to 7-4 and raised his season strikeout total to 73, making him and Brad Lincoln only the fourth duo in school history to top 200 strikeouts in one season.
Hargrove and his Cougar teammates return to action this weekend as they face No. 1 Rice in a pivotal three-game C-USA series at Reckling Park. That series begins at 7 p.m., Friday, continues at 2 p.m., Saturday and wraps up at 1 p.m., Sunday.
All three games can be heard live over the Internet at www.UHCougars.com with former UH letterwinners Nick Torina and Pat Cauley calling all the action. Fans also can follow play-by-play action by clicking on the "Live Stats" link on the schedule at www.UHCougars.com.
Tulane's Warren McFadden was honored Monday as the C-USA Hitter of the Week.
