HOUSTON, Texas - The University of Houston Department of Athletics in conjunction with its multi-media rights holder, ISP Sports, Inc., is pleased to announce that former Cougar quarterback David Klingler has been hired to provide color analysis during UH football radio broadcasts.
Klingler will partner with the "Voice of the Cougars" Tom Franklin, replacing Tony Fitzpatrick who stepped out of the booth and on to the practice field earlier in the spring when he was hired as an assistant coach. Another former Cougar, Chuck Brown, will continue to handle the sideline reporting.
We are delighted David Klingler is joining our broadcast team," commented UH Director of Athletics Dave Maggard. "David had a great football career at University of Houston, and is one of our all time great athletes. David is bright, articulate and has great knowledge of the game and will be a great addition to our University of Houston team."
Houston ISP Sports Assistant Vice President/General Manager Michael Kohler echoes Maggard's sentiments.
"David is extremely well-spoken," added Kohler, "and his ties to the University of Houston football program make him uniquely qualified. His experiences as a college and professional quarterback will bring tremendous insight to our talented broadcast team."
Klingler was a three-year letterman for the Cougars from 1989-91, but it was his 1990 campaign that was one for the record books. In just 11 games Klingler set NCAA records for passing yards (5,140), total offense (5,221), passing touchdowns (54) and touchdowns responsible for (55), as well as attempts, completions and total plays. He threw NCAA-record 11 touchdowns against Eastern Washington on November 17, 1990, and at one time held over 50 NCAA individual records.
He finished his career in 1991 with over 9,000 yards passing and 91 touchdown passes. Klingler was a 1992 first-round draft pick of the Cincinnati Bengals, and he played in the NFL for six seasons for both the Bengals and Oakland Raiders.
A veteran of the Houston sports market, Franklin is pleased to have Klingler as his radio partner.
"I am very excited to have David join our broadcast team for the upcoming 2006 football season," said Franklin. "David is very articulate, and possesses a tremendous understanding and insight into the game that our listeners will find very appealing."
