IRVING - Angel Shamblin was honored with Conference Pitcher of the Week accolades for the third time this season Monday afternoon as announced by the league office. It's the fifth C-USA pitching award for Shamblin in her Cougar career.
Shamblin headlined the Cougars in the circle during its series sweep over Southern Miss. She went 2-0 with a 0.50 ERA and held the Golden Eagles to a .173 batting average in her two starts.
She picked up 18 strikeouts over the weekend and now sits at 144 strikeouts for the season equaling Jamie Falco's mark during the 2002 campaign for No. 2 all-time in program history.
Shamblin opened the series firing a two-hitter and struck out 12 batters extending her scoreless innings stretch to 22.0 innings. The Davie, Fla. native was dominant in the circle retiring 12 of the final 13 batters she faced and allowed only three runners to reach scoring position on the afternoon.
In the series finale, Shamblin sprayed seven hits and was touched up for one earned run. The sophomore right-hander had her scoreless inning stretch snapped at 22.1 innings, but rebounded to mow down six batters. Shamblin got out of a bases loaded one-out jam in the seventh inning getting a pair of fly ball outs.
Houston steps out of C-USA action with a pair of doubleheaders against Texas Southern and Grambling State. First pitch against TSU is on tap for 4pm this afternoon. The Cougars match up with Grambling State Tuesday at 1pm at the Cougar Softball Stadium.
