IRVING - The University of Houston tennis team earned a No. 3 seed and a first round bye at the upcoming Conference USA Tournament Tuesday, as the league office announced the seedings for the upcoming C-USA championship at the Garland Tennis Center in Dallas.
"I'm happy about where we ended up seeded, and I feel that it's something that works to our favor" head coach John Severance said. "It doesn't change the fact that we still have to take care of business and win three matches at the conference tournament."
The 2006 C-USA Tournament gets underway Thursday with three first round matches followed by four quarterfinal matches Friday. The four remaining teams head to the semifinals Saturday, while the championship match is slated for 10am Sunday.
Houston (19-4) has a first round bye and will play the winner of the East Carolina and Memphis match Friday at 2pm in the quarterfinals.
The Cougars enter the tournament on a three-match winning streak and have won seven of its last eight matches. Houston has also won its last five opening matches at the C-USA Tournament and has made the C-USA semifinals in the last three seasons.
"Our section of the draw is very challenging," Severance said. "East Carolina is a quality team that has won a lot of matches, while the potential of a Rice and Marshall quarterfinal is going to be a battle."
The 19 victories by the Cougars are the most in the regular season since the 1989-90 season. Houston also completed an undefeated season at home for the first time since the 1989-90 campaign.
"In a tournament situation all we can do is control how we play," Severance said. "We've been emphasizing our mindset heading into the tournament and having a never say die mentality."
The tournament champion receives Conference USA's automatic bid to the 2006 NCAA Women's Tennis Tournament.
