HOUSTON, Texas - The University of Houston concluded its second week of spring practice with its first controlled scrimmage for an hour-and-a-half today at John O'Quinn Field at Robertson Stadium. UH head coach Art Briles was pleased with both sides of the ball.
"We had good intensity, good effort and good attitude," said Briles. "All the intangibles were taken care of, which is what you have to have because there is no excuse not to have it. We control effort, attitude, determination, and to a certain extent, quickness and ability, because you have to strike your mind and make your body strike (back.)
"I think from those standpoints we're doing pretty well. I like the intensity and the attitude of our players. We got out of the scrimmage relatively injury-free. We have a weakened O-line because of numbers. Jerrod (Butler) broke his foot yesterday, and both (Mark) Kimmey and Sea-Bass (Sebastian Vollmer) out, so were a little thin there. But, those guys out there are doing a heck of a job."
The offense produced four touchdowns on the day, while the defense forced three turnovers. Running back Jackie Battle scored the first Cougar touchdown on an eight-yard run up the middle, a score set up by a Kevin Kolb to Donnie Avery pass of 50 yards. A pair of walk-ons connected for the next UH score, as quarterback Tramaine Dorsey found wide receiver Chaz Rodriguez behind the secondary for a 61-yard score.
Later, Kolb connected with Avery from 63 yards, and running back Garret Hagemeier plowed his way to paydirt from five yards out.
Defensively, Baylor transfer James Francis recovered a fumble, while both Ernest Miller and Quinte Williams came up with interceptions.
The Cougars return to the field on Tuesday, March 28, at 3 pm on the UH practice fields. The Red-White game is slated for Saturday, April 8, at 11 am at the Carl Lewis International Track Complex.
