HouSTON, Texas - The second week of spring football concluded Friday for the University of Houston, setting the stage for its first intra-squad scrimmage tomorrow at 11 am. The Cougars will practice for around 30 minutes before taking part in a controlled scrimmage on the UH practice fields.
As the second week winds down, UH head coach Art Briles is impressed with the attitude, intensity and effort of his team.
"Those are intangibles that we all cannot possess, but our guys are doing a good job of taking care of the things they need to take care of," said Briles. "We're playing with a lot of emotion and zip, so that part of it is good.
"We're moving along well on both sides of the ball, and we return all of our specialists, so we solid there as well."
Briles is set to run his team through a very intense scrimmage tomorrow morning, hoping to get a good look at what portends for the 2006 season; however, staying healthy also is high on the agenda.
"We want to practice at a higher level of speed," added Briles. "We've been at a very high pace in practice, but we'll go live tomorrow throughout the scrimmage, so that will be a little different for us.
"The main thing is to stay healthy and stay alert, and understand down and distance and field position."
Houston kicks off the 2006 by facing cross-town rival Rice on September 2 at Rice Stadium. The Cougars begin the first of seven home games, including three straight, by taking on Tulane on September 9 at John O'Quinn Field at Robertson Stadium.
