HOUSTON - The University of Houston softball team (20-10, 2-1 C-USA) begins a six-game Conference USA roadtrip this weekend at Tulsa (16-9, 3-0 C-USA).
This weekend will mark the first time that Houston and Tulsa will meet on the softball diamond. The Cougars are 2-3 all-time against teams from the Sooner State, including a 1-0 mark against Oklahoma State. The Golden Hurricane are one of five schools playing its inaugural season in Conference USA.
Tulsa will be fifth first-time opponent for the Cougars. Houston is 5-1 against first-time opponents this season, including two wins over Mississippi. The Cougars also face UCF, UTEP, Marshall, Grambling State and Memphis for the initial time later this season.
The Cougars are coming off a 2-1 weekend after taking two straight for East Carolina, after dropping the opening game of the weekend series.
"We need to take our intensity out on the road," pitcher Angel Shamblin said. "As long as we come out on the road and play our game, we should be able to come out on top. We get into trouble when we let the opponents set the tempo."
Shamblin was honored with Conference USA Hitter and Pitcher of the Week accolades earlier this week. It's the fourth C-USA pitching award and first C-USA hitter honor for Shamblin in her Cougar career.
She was only the second player in C-USA history to win both awards in the same week. Sarah Martz of DePaul is the only winner to earn both honors in the same week.
Shamblin went 12-for-25, batting .480 for the week, registering three multi-hit games, which included a trio of doubles and six RBIs. She also extended her team-long hitting streak to nine games and has hit safely in 13 of her last 15 games.
The sophomore hurler also picked up three of Houston's four wins in the circle, compiling a 3-0 mark and a 2.16 ERA. Shamblin struck out 23 batters in 22.2 inning of work over four appearances.
Saturday's doubleheader with the Golden Hurricane begins at 1pm . The two teams conclude the weekend set Sunday playing a single-game with first pitch slated also for 1pm.
