Shamblin Sweeps C-USA Hitter and Pitcher of the Week

IRVING - Angel Shamblin was honored with Conference USA Hitter and Pitcher of the Week accolades Monday afternoon as announced by the league office. It's the fourth C-USA pitching award and first C-USA hitting honor for Shamblin in her Cougar career.

The Davie, Fla. native is only the second player in C-USA history to win both awards in the same week. Sarah Martz of DePaul is the only previous player to earn both honors in the same week accomplishing the feat in both April of 2001 and April of 2004.

Shamblin went 12-for-25 batting .480 for the week at the plate with three multi-hit games, a trio of doubles and six RBIs. She extended her team-long hitting streak to nine games and has hit safely in 13 of her last 15 games.

The sophomore hurler also picked up three of Houston's four wins in the circle compiling a 3-0 mark and a 2.16 ERA. Shamblin struck out 23 batters in 22.2 innings of work in four appearances.

She started the week matching season-best with three hits and three RBIs in the opening game of a doubleheader at Texas-Arlington that included a two-run single to break a 3-3 tie in the 11th inning. She followed that up with a two-hitter in game two allowing only one run against the Mavericks.

Over the weekend against East Carolina, Shamblin went 5-for-6 with two doubles and picked up both wins in the circle to lead Houston to back-to-back victories and the series win.

In game three, Shamblin delivered the game-winning RBI double in the fourth and pitched 3.2 innings of scoreless relief allowing just one hit to the Pirates. She retired nine of the final 10 batters she faced, including striking out the side in the seventh inning.

Houston (20-10, 2-1 C-USA) returns to the diamond next weekend taking on Tulsa with a doubleheader Saturday and a single-game Sunday. First pitch on both days is slated for 1pm. All games from the Donna J. Hardesty Sports Complex will have live stats on UHCougars.com
