HOUSTON - The University of Houston tennis team moved into the No. 72 spot in the Fila Collegiate Tennis Rankings on Tuesday afternoon after upsetting No. 33 Mississippi State and hanging tough with No. 34 Texas A&M on the road last week.
"We're happy to be ranked after the first week of competition," head coach John Severance said. "It shows the direction our program is going."
The Cougars (4-1, 1-0 C-USA) were trailing 3-0 at No. 33 Mississippi State last Thursday before evening the match at 3-3 storming to victories in the No. 4, 5 and 6 singles slot.
Houston trailed 1-0 in doubles action, but the Cougars charged back taking the last two doubles matches to seal the comeback.
"I think we're better than our current ranking at 72," Severance said. "But we have to go out on the court and prove it."
UH returns to the courts concluding a four-match road trip at No. 43 LSU. It will be the third consecutive ranked opponent for the Cougars who lost a 4-3 decision last season against the Tigers in Houston. First serve in Baton Rouge is set for noon.
