SAN ANTONIO - The No. 70 University of Houston tennis team returned to the courts after a two week layoff picking up a 5-2 victory over University of Texas-San Antonio Sunday afternoon at the UTSA Tennis Center.
"We've been very diligent with our time on and off the court over our time off," head coach John Severance said. "Our strong work ethic paid off this afternoon against a young and talented UTSA squad. We played our best match mentally of the season to this point."
The Cougars (6-1) started the match by picking up the doubles point. UH has yet to drop the doubles point in dual matches this season.
The pairs of Kami Miller and Yolandi Terblance along with Brianna Bateup picked up a pair of convincing victories at No. 2 and No. 3, respectively.
Sonja Nikolic was paired with Sarah Reimer, who was making her 2006 debut, in the No. 1 slot. The duo dropped an 8-4 decision.
In singles play, the Cougars registered the first three points to clinch the match.
Tiffany McLoughlin came off the court first with a 6-2, 6-1 victory in the No. 6 spot, while Miller followed with a 6-2, 6-2 win of her own at No. 3. Miller is only one win away from moving into No. 8 all-time in the Houston record book in career singles wins. The Arizona native has won 14 of her last 16 singles matches dating back to the fall season.
"I was proud of the way we responded today after having some pieces out of the lineup," head coach John Severance said. "Sarah (Reimer) did a wonderful job stepping in for Loli (Gomez) in doubles, while Tiffany (McLoughlin) filled in nicely for Yolandi (Terblanche) in singles."
Bateup clinched the match for the Cougars coming away with a 6-3, 6-3 victory in the No. 2 position, while Loli Gomez put the finishes touches on by snapping a personal four-match losing streak. The Spainard emerged with a hard-fought 7-6, 6-3 win in the top spot.
Severance also announced that yesterday's match with Memphis will not be rescheduled. The match was postponed due to rain yesterday.
Houston will make up its match orginally sceduled for February 12 with No. 43 LSU Wednesday in Baton Rouge. First serve against the Tigers is slated for 12pm.
"LSU is a very respected opponent," Severance said. "We're going to go in there this week with nothing to lose. The pressure is on them and not us. That's how we are going to approach it."
