HOUSTON - The University of Houston football team was forced inside to the Yeoman Fieldhouse for the second consecutive Monday as the squad completed an up-tempo 90-minute workout in preparation for the AutoZone Liberty Bowl against South Carolina.
"It throws a kink into your plan anytime that your forced inside," head coach Art Briles said. "Working inside doesn't bother our team because over the season we've been used to being inside at some point during the week."
However, Briles did touch upon some of the advantages of having an indoor practice in cramp quarters.
"We can stress more mental awareness and toughness when we're inside against the more physical part of the game when we're outside," Briles said.
The Cougars (10-3) meet the Gamecocks at 3:30 p.m., Dec. 29 in the AutoZone Liberty Bowl. The game can be heard live on 790 AM The Sports Animal with the pregame show beginning one hour before kickoff. Tom Franklin will handle the play-by-play duties, while former record-setting UH quarterback David Klingler will provide color analysis. Former All-Southwest Conference center Chuck Brown serves as the sideline reporter.
All Cougar Football games can be heard live on the Internet by logging onto www.UHCougars.com. In addition, the Auto Zone Liberty Bowl will be televised on ESPN in the Cougars' eighth appearance on television during the 2006 season. John Saunders will call the play-by-play action with Craig James and Doug Flutie providing analysis.
Houston concluded practice by working on two-minute drill as quarterback Kevin Kolb completed passes in tight spaces to multiple receivers. The Cougar defense finished the workout by dropping back into pass coverage and working on their route reading.
"There's a reason why both teams are in a bowl game," Briles said. "We understand that the margin for error and opportunity are smaller. That's why we have to stay sharp mentally then make sure that your body is prepared physically."
