HOUSTON - The University of Houston football team returned to the practice fields outside at the UH Athletics Complex Friday afternoon for a spirited 90-minute workout.
"It was a great day for a workout and probably was a little warmer than it should have been for this time of year," head coach Art Briles said. "We're just banging around trying to get our minds and bodies acclimated back to being a football team."
This was the first time since Tuesday that Houston (10-3) has held practice. Briles gave the team Wednesday and Thursday off after finishing final exams.
"We're proud of how our guys did well handling their classes," Briles said. "The team got through the fall semester in good shape academically. Now all of our focus, energy and vision goes into preparation for South Carolina."
The Cougars meet the Gamecocks at 3:30 p.m., Dec. 29 in the AutoZone Liberty Bowl. The game can be heard live on 790 AM The Sports Animal with the pregame show beginning one hour before kickoff. Tom Franklin will handle the play-by-play duties, while former record-setting UH quarterback David Klingler will provide color analysis. Former All-Southwest Conference center Chuck Brown serves as the sideline reporter.
All Cougar Football games can be heard live on the Internet by logging onto www.UHCougars.com. In addition, the Liberty Bowl will be televised on ESPN in the Cougars' eighth appearance on television during the 2006 season. John Saunders will call the play-by-play action with Craig James and Doug Flutie providing analysis.
"We've had great senior leadership all season," Briles said. "These guys will keep us on track and allow us to restore our mental edge and physical toughness out on the field."
