HOUSTON - Neila Starratt earned a 6-4, 6-4 victory in the Flight D finals as the University of Houston tennis team ended the fall season on strong note during day three of the Houston Quad Sunday at Hoff Courts on the UH campus.
Starratt jumped out to an early 4-1 lead in the opening set and held on for a 6-4 win. In the second set, Starratt turned a 4-3 deficit into a 6-4 victory by claiming the final three games of the frame.
The Cougars also won Flight A singles by default as teammates Leila Salek and Loli Gomez didn't play due to the weather. Anna Djananova and Sonja Nikolic lost their singles finals in a pair of tight decisions.
"We had a very positive fall season," head coach John Severance said. "It's the opposite of what we had last fall. It was our singles play that was strong. The good news for us is that during the spring season singles count for more points that doubles."
Houston was in both doubles finals but dropped both matches. Salek and Gomez lost 8-4, while Vicky Simpson and Sonja Nikolic dropped an 8-6 decision.
"We've identified our strengths and weaknesses," Severance said. "We have a couple of weeks to continue to work before coming back in January to make our final adjustments before we start the spring season."
The Cougars open the spring season with a doubleheader against Louisiana Tech and Lee College at Hoff Courts on Jan. 26.
